Introducing CJ Spears

Chasejamison Akilah Manar-Spears (CJ Spears) joins Bootstrap Publishing as one of our newest authors. Born and raised in the Bay Area, CJ is a visionary writer whose work blooms at the intersection of poetry, afro-surrealism, and science fiction. A yoga teacher and revolutionary thinker, CJ’s words are deeply rooted in ancestral wisdom, ecology, and spirit—inviting readers into worlds where imagination becomes a vehicle for healing, truth, and liberation. Their unique voice brings together community, culture, and creativity, crafting narratives that both honor tradition and envision new futures.

CJ’s upcoming project, The Book of Cadence, is the first in a planned trilogy of afro-surrealist climate fiction stories. Inspired by a dream just before the pandemic, the novel explores themes of prophecy, family, and resilience in a world shaped by rising oceans, purple skies, and matriarchal survival. Drawing from influences such as Octavia Butler, Missy Elliot, and Assata Shakur, CJ’s writing celebrates Black womanhood, magic, and the radical reimagining of society. We are honored to support their journey as they bring this visionary trilogy—and the worlds within it—to life.
