Miami-Dade Public Library Supports Local Authors!

Lemon City Branch Features Children’s Book Author, Art Activity and Reverse Book Signing

MIAMI, FL (01/19/2020) - In a city that’s known for art, local authors and Indie publishers are getting much needed support from the Miami-Dade Public Library through their local authors initiative. The program features a series of events at the individual branches and a larger fair at the Main Branch. The first fair took place last September and featured nearly 30 local authors.

Local programming at the branches range from book readings, signings and interactive activities. Authors are encouraged to sell books as part of the program offered free to the community, and their books become part of the library system for cardholders to check out.

This past Saturday the Lemon City branch welcomed Miriam Dorsett, Author of The Lion and the Elephant: A children’s art book. Dorsett designed a reverse book signing for attendees. Participants created their very own cover design for the book, and then signed the Authors book. There was also time for Q&A and a reading.

This is the second book written by Dorsett, who grew up going to libraries as a child. She said: “I never dreamed I would be doing a reading of a book I wrote in a public library.” Noting that her mentor and big sister through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America program would take her there because she loved to read. “I’m very thankful that the Miami library offers this program, and I hope to come back to do it again soon!”

The Lion and the Elephant is a gender-neutral children's art book about the journey of life and friendship. It has been featured on What If World, The Big Idea Box, The Single Mom Tribe Podcast, the Oye Mujer Podcast, and the 12 Minute Talks Podcast!
